Color: it’s a big decision, and it can also be an overwhelming one.

My most important tip that I can offer to you:

Wear a color other than black.

Yes, black is classic, and I’d be willing to bet that every single person out there reading this owns at least one professional outfit–suit, sportcoat, blazer or dress–that is black. In real life, you can totally rock this color, but for 99% of the population, wearing black in a headshot will make you look washed out and paler than you actually are. In other words, it’s the least flattering color choice possible.

What are your other options? Navy blue is a fantastic choice: almost as dark as black, but with richer tones.

A wide range of grays will also work. From deep charcoal to silver, there’s a shade that will match with almost any skin tones and hair color.

Jewel tones look fantastic on most people. Deep purples, greens and blues can offer balance when paired with a more neutral gray or blue.

Color is also a good way to express some personality: subtle patterns, accessories with color (think scarves, ties and jewelry) and under-layers of clothing are opportunities to incorporate your favorite shades.

Help! I only own black tops, and I can’t get my hands on a different color before headshot day.

Don’t worry! A few tricks to help break up the monotony include a scarf or a shirt collar that places some color and distance between your face and the black fabric.

When in doubt, pull a couple ideas from your closet, snap a few photos of them in good, natural lighting, and send them off to your photographer for additional advice.
